THE Knysna Motor Show enthralled vehicle owners and visitors alike with a splendid display of pristine veteran, vintage and classic cars at the weekend.

More than 120 cars were displayed at the rally on Saturday, including four Minis and four Morgan sports cars. This year the Morgan marque racks up a century of production and the Mini celebrates 50 years of motoring history.

“This year the weather has played the game and we are very happy with the attendance. About 1500 people have passed through. It has been a wonderful day,” said show convenor Barry Giggins.

The cars showcased names that are legendary in the annals of motoring – Triumph, Austin Healey, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Citroen vied for attention with the likes of Morgan, MG, Austin, Morris, Jaguar and Ford.

Dennis and Marilyn Houseman of George attended the rally in their 1960 Austin Healey 3000.

“The Austin Healey has brutish power and to drive it is an experience,” Dennis said.

Ricky Cooper of Knysna brought along one of two Morgan Roadster sports cars that he owns.

“I started restoring this 1957 Roadster in November last year and finished it just in time for the show. Morgan is the ultimate classic sports car.

“Until you have owned one it is impossible to appreciate the look of the car and the special experience of driving it.”

Restoring vehicles is the lifeblood of aficionados of motoring. In his time, Cooper has renovated 24 MGs, three Austin Healeys and two E Type Jaguars.

Almost a third of the vehicles at the Knysna Motor Show were the much-loved MG. A total of 33 MGs covered a range of six different models from 1947 onwards. Bruce Henderson, chairman of the South Cape Centre of the MG Car Club, said: “The MG has always been popular because of its availability and price. The response of the club‘s members to this rally has been overwhelming”.

Giggins reported that the Knysna Motor Show had raised more than R15000 for charities and the Knysna Hospice.
