THE Klein Karoo Klassique Festival, which takes place from August 14-16 in Oudtshoorn, promises not only to delight the senses of classical music lovers, but foodies will be swept off their feet too.

The festival, a first of its kind in the Garden Route, will feature chamber music and opera performances.

Home-made Belgian chocolates, sparkling wine, flame-grilled ostrich, home-baked herb bread, marshmallow pudding and snoek cakes are just some of the delights that promise to please the palate.

One of the gastronomic highlights will be a workshop at the Karusa Vineyards where visitors can follow the process of making Cap Classique according to age-old French methods.

At Kango Wines, home-made Belgian chocolate treats will be paired with wine, a demonstration that sold out at this year‘s Klein Karoo National Arts Festival.

Celebrity chef Francois Ferreira will host two shows, including an eight-course menu paired with prize- winning port wines from Calitzdorp.

A number of restaurants will offer enticing traditional fair, such as a variety of Cape Malay curry dishes, venison and ostrich dishes, brandy pudding and potjiekos.

A farmer‘s market in the apricot orchards of Schoemanshoek on the Saturday promises a variety of deli foods, pancakes and more Belgian chocolate, along with donkey cart rides.

For those more interested in the opera music, South African rising stars Pretty Yende and Given Nkosi will give a gala performance with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra on August 16.

The orchestra‘s performances at the festival will be directed by renowned conductor Theodore Kunchar.
