FRIDAY the 13th is generally an ominous sounding date, but for teens and anyone who has considered harming themselves through self- mutilation, depression or suicide attempt, this month it’s the international day to write “love” on one’s arms in solidarity with people struggling with these issues.

The “To Write Love On Her Arms” (TWLOHA) campaign is a movement to counter self-mutilation, depression and suicide.

It acknowledges the problems but focuses mainly on offering real solutions to people who are in trouble.

The Bay has its own local street representative, matriculant Kaja Crompton, who is promoting the movement in Port Elizabeth.

Fly Magazine, a Bay-based teen publication, is supporting TWLOHA saying they wanted to show “support instead of judging people as weak” and to be “real about the challenges and confusion of living in the 21st century”.

People are encouraged to show their solidarity by writing “love” on their arms on Friday.
