A 30-SEATER SA Airlink plane transporting 29 passengers and two crew members from Port Elizabeth to East London veered off the runway on take-off this afternoon.

None of the passengers were injured, but they were treated for shock and received counselling from psychologists.

Police spokesman Sandra Janse van Rensburg said, “It is alleged that the aircraft lost control of the nose wheel steering.”

Port Elizabeth airport manager Azad Cassim said the flight was cancelled, but would resume tomorrow morning. All other flights were delayed.

Some time ago, I submitted a relevant comment that could have been deleted (or censored?)in regard to the "success" and readiness of the emergency services in this pleasant and peaceful village-next-to-the-sea, after some exercises took place. If an air disaster would occur, involving the ever growing Walmer township, almost encroaching the airfield at present, the emergency services, estate and private combined, would be almost immediately overwhelmed by the number of patients to attend. The "highly efficient" ambulance services (particularly the "highly transformed" ones) would be stretched to the limit and beyond. Naturally, this would spur the politically appointed authorities in attendance, into energetic finger-pointing while displaying "holy indignation" and promising appointment of consultant teams to investigate and teams to devise solutions (they have to be seen working according to their "mandate of the People"). We then could be catapulted into world fame besides our mystic "white" beaches, contemplative-looking seagulls and mischievous dolphins/penguins. The "intrepid" journalists of the local media would have (or be allowed)to lift their rear sides from the armchairs and go to the field to verify the sad reality of the calamitous conditions of the health facilities, and the awakened before-election-time opposition parties could provide a background of crescendo humming tune "I told you so"...
