FIREFIGHTERS are still battling to bring a blaze in the Knysna area under control, but Eden fire chief Annelize Lampbrecht said they were winning the war against six others from Harlem in the east to Still Bay in the West.

Lampbrecht confirmed no luxury homes in Phantom Pass, holiday resorts or eco reserves had been damaged.

She also said no one had been evacuated.

Reinforcements from KwaZulu Natal and the Free State are expected to arrive in Knysna within the next hour to help exhausted firefighters who have been battling blazes around the clock since last Friday.

“Luckily we’ve had no guys suffer from heat exhaustion yet, although these hot temperatures are not playing along. Residents have been fantastic, providing us with cool drinks and snacks to keep us going,” she said, referring to the unrelenting heatwave in the Southern Cape.

By 10am the mercury was already at 30°C and will reach a maximum 37°C along the coast.

Lampbrecht said although roads in the Knysna area had been closed yesterday due to the heavy smoke, they were reopened this morning.
