THE Nelson Mandela Bay oversight committee appears to be on a collision course with traffic police after it decided the number of fines collected a day by each officer should be listed in the city’s integrated development plan as a key performance indicator.

This means it will be a standard for judging the safety and security directorate’s performance.

It was reported yesterday that this was omitted from a salary agreement struck with the city traffic department.

The committee was told yesterday that the fine collection rate in the 2008/09 financial year was just over 50%, with Leon de Villiers (DA) saying productivity was the major issue relating to the traffic department.

It was for this reason the rate needed to be listed as a performance indicator.

Robin Williams (DA) said the national average was 10 fines issued a day, while the collection rate in Nelson Mandela Bay stood at less than one a day.

Committee chairman Charmaine Williams, backed by ANC councillor Marsla Odayer, said the daily rate should be included as a key performance indicator.
