A FUTURISTIC thriller, a true-life drama and an art film focusing on celebrity chefs open at cinemas in the Eastern and Southern Cape this weekend.
Surrogates: Based on a graphic novel by Robert Venditti, this film stars Bruce Willis as an FBI agent in a futuristic society where humans have withdrawn from society and control highly evolved robots, called surrogates, which live their “lives” for them.
But the peace in this Utopian society is shattered when the genius college student who invented the surrogates is murdered.
Ving Rhames, Radha Mitchell and Rosamund Pike co-star in the 88-minute film which carries a PG13 rating and is directed by Jonathan Mostow.
It is opening at The Bridge and The Boardwalk.
The Informant: Matt Damon (who put on a lot of weight for the role) stars in the true-life story of Mark Whitacre, the highest-ranking corporate whistle-blower in US history.
He offers to help the FBI, but they soon realise he has his own agendas and goals he wants to achieve.
Steven Soderbergh (of Erin Brockovich fame) directs the 108 minute comedy drama which co-stars Scott Bakula, Rusty Schwimmer and Frank Welker.
It is only opening at Walmer Park.
Julie and Julia: Writer and director Nora Ephron (most famous for Sleepless in Seattle) combines the memoirs My Life in France, by Julia Child and Julie & Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously by Julie Powell.
Meryl Streep plays celebrity chef Child who was famous in the 1950s and ’60s, while Amy Adams plays Powell, an amateur chef who hopes to cook every recipe in Child’s book over a one-year period to give her material for her blog.
The two-hour film carries a 10 mature accompaniment rating and is only opening at the Garden Route Mall.
In preparation for the release of the teenage vampire movie New Moon, Walmer Park is re-releasing the film’s predecessor, Twilight this weekend.
