WITH the festive season hitting us soon, it’s no surprise that many reality TV shows like The Biggest Loser will provide basic exercise and dieting tips on how viewers can stay in shape this season and get the body they’ve always dreamt of.
One show not to be missed this Tuesday is the inspirational weight-loss journey of Ruby Gettinger, on The Style Network reality TV show Ruby.
Weighing in at 500 pounds (227kg) Gettinger, of Georgia in the US, hits crisis point in her life as her excessive eating causes her weight to spiral out of control. She loses her love of her life and the battle to shed the kilos becomes a matter of life and death.
Ruby is an inspiring and heartfelt portrayal of her emotional quest to lose weight, help others and ultimately change her life forever.
Viewers are invited inside Ruby’s incredible life.
Having hit a peak of 715 pounds (325kg) back in 1995, Ruby’s weight has fluctuated at a dangerous level ever since, but events take a drastic turn when her doctor issues her with a terrifying ultimatum – lose weight or lose your life.
Spurred on by a sense of determination and her supportive network of loyal friends, Ruby resolves to take immediate action, embarking on a journey that she hopes will turn her life around.
Assembling a super team of dieticians, personal trainers and psychologists, all of whom are committed to educating and motivating her, Ruby undertakes the biggest challenge she’s ever faced – and she’s taking the world with her.
Can she end her cycle of food addiction and, most importantly, take her first tentative steps down the road towards health and happiness?
Viewers will get to see first hand how an obese person copes with life in a size-ist society as Ruby struggles through seemingly ordinary daily activities, from sitting down to getting dressed.
The documentary-type reality TV series also evaluates Ruby’s amazing friendships, following the close circle of allies who have followed her trials and tribulations over the years.
Proving crucial towards combating her unhealthy eating and inactive lifestyle, as well as helping her to cope with her diabetes diagnosis, Ruby’s fiercely loyal loved ones are on hand to help her stay on track.
Tracked by cameras every step of the way, Ruby’s prognosis has already captured the hearts and minds of the US, with the series quickly becoming the highest rated in the history of The Style Network to date.
Ruby airs on Tuesdays at 11pm on The Style Network (DStv Channel 183).
