(7) AUGUST with Josh Hartnett, Adam Scott, Naomie Harris and David Bowie. Directed by Austin Chick.

WITH reference to the phenomenal dot-com bubble of the early ’90s, August is about two brothers, Tom (Josh Hartnett) and Josh (Adam Scott), who own Landshark, a company worth billions of dollars.

The dot-com bubble is the internet-based phenomenon that made companies’ share prices skyrocket by simply adding an “e” prefix or a “dot.com” to the end of their products.

Thanks to Tom’s arrogance and Josh’s hyper-intelligent mind Landshark outshines other companies when the bubble bursts. Then Tom’s arrogance backfires. Weeks away from make or break for their business, Landshark faces a serious financial crisis. This is obvious to everyone but Tom. Things progressively get worse as he runs into his ex-girlfriend, Sarah (Naomie Harris). As he struggles along he finds arrogance is not always the best option: especially when it comes to investor Ogilvie (David Bowie).

August tends to be tedious, but the eerie music and the clever, artistic cinematography make it a rather bizarre, but definitely enjoyable, movie. Reviewed by Lana Breedt ARTS CORRESPONDENT breedtl@avusa.co.za
