EASTERN Cape Philharmonic Orchestra gala concert, conducted by Graham Scott (Feather Market Centre).
A WIDE array of musical delights could be heard at the Feather Market Centre on Sunday as local South African artists took to the stage.
Starting out with The Black Pearl, from Pirates of the Caribbean, the orchestra appeared to be devoid of spark, with a few areas lacking cohesion among players.
Port Elizabeth audiences are truly fortunate to have had the opportunity to hear South African pop icons Brandon October and Bianca le Grange.
Le Grange gave an interesting rendition of Koos du Plessis’ Kinders van die Wind, but not altogether successful in its portrayal.
Kaapse Draai sung by Brandon October, however, was a real treat, and his smooth voice suited the choice of repertoire.
The orchestra appeared to enjoy the Fred Astaire Medley, which was really a series of Cole Porter songs.
This charming work was performed with an excellent understanding of the genre.
Richard Rodgers’ Slaughter on 10th Avenue provided much-needed drama to the first half of the concert.
Although a little longwinded, this work was well performed under the careful direction of conductor Graham Scott.
The highlight of the afternoon was without a doubt The Warsaw Concerto, by composer Richard Addinsell, performed by local concert pianist and much-loved lecturer Erika Bothma.
This moving work was relayed with absolute precision, and real heart. Bothma truly deserved the standing ovation she received.
Another highlight was October’s performance of the Anthem from Chess.
This exquisite work brought a couple of tears to many an audience member.
Brandon October truly overshadowed Le Grange, who appeared to lack poise and polish.
Although possessing a good rapport with the audience, she appeared a little under-rehearsed at times.
The afternoon was nevertheless a relaxing and entertaining experience, raising good money for various charities, and filling Port Elizabeth audiences with a little Christmas spirit. – Reviewed by Nicolette Fyvie ARTS CORRESPONDENT
