PORT ELIZABETH gym goers who want to have their health, fitness and beauty requirements seen to in one convenient venue finally have a place where all their needs will be met. Space, at the Rochelle Centre in Greenacres, is celebrating its second anniversary in October – and what better way to mark their success than by opening a beauty salon to make for a fully integrated health and beauty experience.

“Space, a Power Plate concept centre, aims to combine health, fitness and beauty under one roof,” said its new beauty manager, Sonia Beukes.

The gym has been operating for nearly two years now and the new beauty salon offers a variety of massages and nail treatments.

“There are five treatment rooms, including the nail bar,” Beukes said.

Beauty treatments include facials, with therapists using the excellent Nimue brand; while lash, brow and upper- lip tinting and bleaching are also done. Depilève products are used for waxing, while Africology products are used for various body therapies and Jane Iredale mineral make-up completes the cosmetic line-up.

Other services available at the beauty salon include a sunbed for tanning, foot and hand treatments, body sculpting, power wrapping and detox sessions, as well as a combo special which includes six body sculpting treatments and five power wrapping treatments, all aimed at achieving weight loss, toning and cellulite reduction.

The gym at Space is fully equipped with eight Power Plate machines, one treadmill and three bikes, as well as exercise balls and dumb-bells. Gym members can relax at the centre‘s health bar where tea, coffee and mineral water are served free of charge.

“There are six trainers, each working closely with a client using the Power Plate,” Beukes said. “The gym is also fitted with televisions so clients can stay entertained while exercising.”

Power Plate machines vibrate at a frequency which causes involuntary muscle contractions throughout the body, Beukes explained.

“These vibrations enable the body to use up to 100% muscle fibres, which makes Power Plate an intense workout in a short period of time. Every 15 minutes is equal to an hour workout.”

Some of the advantages of using the Power Plate method of toning and training is that it has been found to increase the metabolism, improve muscle strength, and bring about cardiovascular fitness and flexibility. It also aids blood circulation and lymph drainage, besides improving skin tone and cellulite, and fighting water retention. An added benefit is the reduction of stress hormones, making for a feel-good experience all round.

“The machine can be used by everyone, from an unfit person to a top-fit professional athlete. It can also be used very successfully as part of a rehabilitation programme with the guidance of a physiotherapist and biokinetisist.”

There are three gym packages available at Space. The first option includes unlimited use of 30-minute sessions on the Power Plate.

The second option includes the unlimited use of the Power Plate; a maximum of one sunbed session per day, three times a week, as well as a 10-minute cellulite/ slimming treatment and a 20-minute aromatherapy massage once a week.

The third option is similar to option two, but excludes one service – either the use of the sunbed, slimming or aromatherapy massage.

“There is total privacy and lockers are provided,” said Beukes.

Operating hours at Space are Monday to Saturday from 6am to 8pm at the gym, while the beauty salon operates from 7am to 7pm.

On Saturday both sections are open from 8am to 1pm.
