Forlee family in shock over death

By Bianca Capazorio

FAMILY and friends are still reeling after a tragic diving accident at Seaview claimed the life of a popular young Port Elizabeth man.

Sherwood store manager Andrew Forlee, 25 – a member of the 130-strong Forlee family – drowned after suffering a brain haemorrhage last weekend.

He had been diving with two friends when the accident occurred at around 5pm.

Forlee had blacked out while under the water. Doctors told the family he had probably continued breathing after the haemorrhage, causing him to drown.

Forlee’s diving partners alerted the ambulance services and police.

The young man, whom family members say had always loved the ocean, had an open water diver’s qualification, which allows divers to go down to a depth of 18 metres anywhere in the world. The course is usually completed over a few days with diving practice in pools and in the open water.

Port Elizabeth diving instructor Peter Dyzel said a brain haemorrhage under water was very uncommon, and that he could not think of “anything one could do wrong under water that would cause haemorrhaging”.

Forlee’s brother, Dion, said his brother had “loved anything to do with the sea. He was a keen fisherman and loved diving. He also loved seafood.”

Cousin Daron said Andrew had, ironically, always chosen to support and donate money to the National Sea Rescue Institute.

Forlee attended St George’s Preparatory, Westering High School and Woodridge College, as well as Russell Road College. He was an all-round sportsman, playing cricket and golf in addition to fishing and diving.

“Just think of any good word you could use to describe a person, and it describes Andrew,” Dion said.

His brother was “kind and supportive”. “You could rely on him for anything.”

Dion’s fiancee, Camilla Kath, said Andrew was “always laughing and joking, and he loved making other people laugh”.

Dion and Camilla were due to get married on Andrew’s birthday next Saturday, June 4. They have since decided that the wedding will take place on the same day next year.

Daron said that while he had been on the phone to Dion and Camilla discussing wedding dates, Andrew had been excited, shouting in the background that it had to be on his birthday.

Delivery the key to nation’s success

Its failures fully to deliver affect the matters of old age pensions, keeping hospitals running in an efficient and caring way and getting township schools up to scratch. All these could be rectified by proper service delivery, by ensuring that the machinery of government turns efficiently, that our hospitals are properly staffed and run, that the social services help those for whom they are intended and that municipal services promote the health and comfort of all....
