Cup final teams chasing massive incentive

Special Correspondent

JOHANNESBURG – Two young SA coaches, Pitso Mosimane and Roger De Sa, will be at each other’s throats as they both chase the R2.5-million on offer to the victorious team in the Absa Cup soccer final at Olympia Park in Rustenberg today.

They may be relegated to Mvela Golden League, but Wits do not want to be forgotten.

Today they will re-write the history books if they beat SuperSport United and become the first team to take the Absa Cup with them to the first division.

Wits know they are facing an on-form team who twice bundled them out the semi-finals of knockout competitions this season, as well as beating them in their league match.

Clever Boys, therefore, go to Olympia Park with revenge in mind.

United boast plenty of quality players in their starting line-up.

They have played more than 50 games this season, yet the United youngsters have shown no signs of burnout.

They remain energetic and raring to go.

Wits, on the other hand, are driven by need. They last tasted cup glory in 1995.

The current Wits team does not compare to the successful Wits class of 1995, but in Benson Mhlongo, Reagan Noble, Wayne Roberts and Sipho Mngomezulu, they have enough ammunition to shoot down Supersport United and lay their hands on the truly handsome prize of R2.5-million.

Having beaten Kaizer Chiefs and defending champions Moroka Swallows on their way to the final, there is no reason why Wits University should not be confident of putting the Supersport United hoodoo to rest.

`

Both teams are full of youngsters, with the exception of Tico Tico and Peter Khoabane in the United camp, and Charles Yohane, Simon Makhubela, and Thierry Mouyomma in the Wits side.

Both young coaches are former Bafana players.

Mosimane was a good striker at Pirates, Cosmos and also in Greece during his heyday, while De Sa was a respected goalkeeper for both Swallows and Sundowns.

Appropriately, with a former goalkeeper as coach, Wits have one of the strongest defences in the PSL. They have conceded only one goal in the Absa Cup.

`

However, United are the leading goal-scorers in the tournament with 20 and they will unquestionably test their opponents’ back four.

When asked if his team would be making any special plans for Lungisani Ndlela and Tico Tico, Wits official Dennis Tshabalala responded by asking if United would be making special plans for Mngomezulu and Noble.

On the issue of Supersport United being busy calculating the winning bonuses, Tshabalala said: “The slogan of the tournament is ‘dream it, live it’ and United are within their rights to dream.

“But unfortunately they won’t live their dream as it will turn into a nightmare and they will have to live that nightmare,” he said.

Tshabalala’s confidence is backed by Absa Cup history which is in favour of the underdogs. Having been relegated, the Wits players know that the they will be under scrutiny as good performances today could secure them contracts elsewhere.

Delivery the key to nation’s success

LET’s face it, South Africa is no welfare state. Its failures fully to deliver affect the matters of old age pensions, keeping hospitals running in an efficient and caring way and getting township schools up to scratch. All these could be rectified by proper service delivery, by ensuring that the machinery of government turns efficiently, that our hospitals are properly staffed and run, that the social services help those for whom they are intended and that municipal services promote the health and comfort of all....
