A performance that satisfies

IT’S a measure of the success of South Africa’s democracy that most of the nation’s citizens – two-thirds, in fact – are satisfied with the performance of our President. That is a reflection of the respect in which Mbeki is held – a somewhat remote and austere figure, one who does not stoop to cheap vote-winning ploys but who leads the nation with supreme intelligence and a commitment to hard work. He does not employ the tricks and extravagant displays of affection that some political leaders in other nations resort to in order to win votes....
