Bulldogs bite Elephants in Eastern Cape derby

THE Border Bulldogs claimed their first win of the Vodacom Cup rugby campaign by beating the BA Mighty Elephants 31-25 (halftime 18-5) in an Eastern Cape derby in East London yesterday.

Bulldogs No 8 Lubabalo Mzwakali produced an outstanding display with strong running and excellent link play. His natural game is well suited to the high- paced Bulldogs game resulting in a standout performance from the young loose forward.

The Bulldogs showed that old-fashioned running rugby is alive and well in the Eastern Cape – at least on the Border. The Port Elizabeth neighbourhood clearly favoured a more direct approach.

The Elephants played the game through their heavier pack and favoured the rolling maul as a tactic of choice, which made for an intriguing match-up.

Border raced into a 15-point lead after 14 minutes thanks to some swift strikes. The first came through wing Ian Fihlani, who seems to improve with age. He beat a flying cover tackle to score in the corner after a slick build-up in which nearly the entire team handled the ball.

Scorers:

Border – Tries: Ian Fihlani, Elric van Vuuren, Lubabalo Mzwakali. Conversions: Stuart Hudson (2). Penalties: Hudson (4).

EP – Tries: Os van der Walt, Norman Nelson, Noel de Villiers, Heinrich Dreyer. Conversion: Chris Jonck. Penalty: Chris Jonck.
