Life sentences for killers of businessman, landlord Nel

Derrick Spies DEPUTY CHIEF REPORTER spiesd@avusa.co.za

THE two people convicted of murdering Jeffreys Bay businessman Hein Nel were sentenced yesterday to life in jail.

Port Elizabeth High Court Judge Chris Jansen also sentenced both Natasha Dziwonu, 32, and Jongisizwe Mamase, 33, to 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances, which will run concurrently.

Nel‘s body was found under Dziwonu‘s single bed in a flat in Central in October 2006.

Friends and family of the two let out cries of disbelief when Jansen passed sentence, some even getting up and leaving the court.

As Dziwonu was being led out of the dock, she turned, smiled at her friends and waved. Mamase kept his eyes averted, his head down.

During the two-week trial, which ran last year, it was revealed that Nel had gone to collect rent from Dziwonu at a flat he owned in Jola Court in Pearson Street, on October 6, 2006. When he arrived, he was overpowered and beaten until he gave the pin code for his bank card. Evidence was led that Dziwonu had drawn R1 000 from Nel‘s account before he was strangled.
