High noon in PE forWorld Cup rivals

Melody Brandon WEEKEND POST REPORTER brandonm@avusa.co.za

THERE will be no horsing around at the Port Elizabeth Riding Club at noon tomorrow in the main 2008 Show-jumping Blue Steel Equestrian World Cup qualifier.

Riders from around the country converged on the Lorraine club this week for the qualifying event, which started on Thursday.

Jennifer Hooke, vice chairman of the Port Elizabeth Riding Club, said 150 riders from across the country were competing in the third leg of the international event.

Governed by the 17-nation FEI (Federation of Equestrianaire International), there are six legs – Pretoria, Kimberley, KwaZulu Natal, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth – in which South Africa‘s top show-jumpers will compete for a place in the 2009 World Cup.

Many of the competitors have represented South Africa, including 2008 South African overall winner Shaun Neil and Barry Taylor, the top show- jumper in South Africa, as well as 2006 overall winner Jonathon Clarke and Sean Henderson, currently leading in this year‘s South African leg of the FEI World Cup.

Johannesburg equestrian couple Lorette and Barry Taylor, who met through riding, have a host of accolades between them.

Lorette was the country‘s top show-jumper in 2003 and 2007, and Barry has been its show-jumper of the year five times.

And so it is clear that much harsher punitive action – rather than more passive awareness campaigns or better driver education – is the key to changing that behaviour....
