IN an unprecedented global show of affection, Nelson Mandela was a birthday boy like no other yesterday as he was showered with tributes and good wishes from around the world....

Birthday wishes for Mandela

FW de Klerk, former president, who worked closely with Madiba for six years after his release: “He was a hard, sometimes remorseless, negotiating partner and our relationship was often severely strained. Nevertheless, whenever the situation demanded it we were able to overcome our differences and take concerted action to defuse the crises ... I am honoured to be able to call him my friend. Happy birthday, Madiba!”...

Birthday greetings from far and wide

Graca Machel, who celebrated her 10th wedding anniversary with Madiba yesterday: “After 27 years in jail, what he longed for most was not the glory of political life, but to have a family life. And that, if I can say it in a very modest way, is what I gave him back ... I‘m happy that in the sunset years of his life, I‘m there for him. And, of course, he‘s there for me too. Happy birthday Nelson”...
