Bay United will hope to cement their position with good win over Stars

Chumani Bambani WEEKEND POST REPORTER

BAY United will face yet another baptism of fire when they meet Free State Stars at the Welkom Rugby Stadium tomorrow.

Umlilo will go into the clash with a slight advantage over Owen da Gama‘s Ea Lla Koto after their brilliant showing in their 2-0 win over Orlando Pirates last weekend. The Port Elizabeth side is upbeat and full of confidence, and will be looking at registering their first win away from home in their debut season against the winless Stars.

Should Da Gama fail to put the shine back at Stars and come out of the game without a point, his head could be in line for the chop. Stars management showed their intentions of wanting results when they fired their previous coach, David Duncan, just weeks before the commencement of the PSL season after being defeated by Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN 8 first round. Da Gama has failed to register a win, losing two of his previous matches and drawing one.

United striker Jimmy Zakazaka will be the man to watch, as he will be likely to up his game against his former club. Siyabulela Songwiqi will without a doubt trouble Stars on the left flank if he continues his performances from previous games. Luntu Mazana, who scored the beautiful goal that put the nail in the coffin for Pirates, will also be a menace for the Stars‘ defence.

The Umlilo defence, arguably one of the combinations with the most experienced players, will not be taking any prisoners. With captain Duran Francis‘s hard tackling and Patrick Mayo‘s cleaning up, they may prove to be a frustration for the Stars‘ attack.

Keeper Arthur Brown, who had a superb game last weekend, will be looking at keeping yet another clean sheet.

A win for Umlilo will put them in a good position on the log and will do the side plenty of good by avoiding the bottom of the table from the early stages of the season. The weekend‘s fixtures are:

TODAY: Maritzburg United vs AmaZulu at Mpumalanga Stadium (3.30pm); Mamelodi Sundowns vs Golden Arrows at Super Stadium (8pm); Orlando Pirates vs Santos at Ellis Park (8pm) TOMORROW: Free State Stars vs Bay United at Welkom Rugby Stadium (3.30pm); Thanda Royal Zulu vs SuperSport United at Mpumalanga Stadium (3.30pm); Moroka Swallows vs Kaizer Chiefs at Olympia Park (3.30pm)

Health minister brings new hope

HOW refreshing it is to finally have a health minister who actually appears to understand the challenges facing South Africa. This week, for the first time since she was appointed after a cabinet reshuffle, Barbara Hogan spoke publicly about some of the hurdles that face her department . She has vowed to “get things right” in providing Aids treatment, and her work will certainly be cut out for her following the damage caused by her predecessor, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, who amongst other oddities touted beetroot, African potatoes and other vegetables as a cure-all for HIV....

Ultimate thrill possible for wannabe wheelie experts

Brett Adkins

COME on, admit it. If you‘ve ever seen a really fired-up biker perform a tar-tearing, gravity-defying wheelie in front of you, you must have wondered what the sensation is like – and then quickly dismissed the thought because of the all too obvious risk factor. But take all danger (and illegality) out of the equation and it probably becomes a lot more tempting....

Not quite Vegas but still pretty great

THE VEGAS SUPERSTARS, featuring Danny Fisher and the Centrestage All-Star Band. (Boardwalk Vodacom Amphitheatre, tonight and Wednesday to Saturday at 7.30pm):
