Brazilians ‘just won‘t allow‘ another Bay United victory

Chumani Bambani WEEKEND POST REPORTER

BAY United is hungry for a second win in the Absa Premiership when they face Mamelodi Sundowns in Atteridgeville‘s Super Stadium.

The Eastern Cape giant killers will not have it easy against the side they booted out of the Telkom Knockout Cup at the same venue last weekend.

“We don‘t want Bay United to repeat the result. We just won‘t allow them to do that again. It would be very embarrassing for us if that were to happen. The team is training very hard to ensure we come back with maximum points,” Sundowns spokesman Mahlatse Mphahlele said yesterday.

The Brazilians will take the Pretoria field without star players Surprise Moriri, Sibusiso Zuma and wayward defender Mbulelo “OJ” Mabizela.

“We have all the other very capable players available, with the exclusion of those three. Now that we are out of the Telkom Cup, it gives us the opportunity to focus on the league and we will continue going from strength to strength,” added Mphahlele.

United will attempt to get back on the winning track with the team work and hunger that they have shown in previous matches this season.

“It‘s going to be tough. We are going out there to give our best and, if our best isn‘t good enough, we will continue to work harder. It will take a really special team effort (tomorrow) to beat Sundowns again. They are a tough side,” said Umlilo captain Duran Francis.

Zambian international Linos Chalwe is hungry for a goal and has his eyes set on opening his goal account tomorrow and help Bay United bring the three points home.

“I am hoping to get on the scorers‘ sheet on Sunday (tomorrow) ,” he said. Once I open my account, more goals are sure to come. We are really looking forward to taking all the points. Nothing is impossible. We need to work and hope that the heavens will smile on us. We are looking forward to the challenge. It will be difficult, but we can do it.”

United keeper Arthur Bartman, who is enjoying a good run of form, will without doubt have his hands full, with goal-hungry Mozambican striker Dario Monteiro and Lerato Chabangu set to fire in from all angles.

Bartman will be relying on the defence of Francis, Asanda Mvalo, Abednigo Netshiozwi and Sakhile Makhatini to ensure another clean sheet.

Kickoff for the game will be at 5pm and it will be televised on SuperSport 4.

Other Premier Soccer League fixtures for the weekend are:

Today: Free State Stars v Orlando Pirates (Charles Mopeli Stadium 3.30pm); Kaizer Chiefs v AmaZulu (Loftus Stadium 4pm); Ajax Cape Town v SuperSport United (Athlone Stadium 8pm).

Tomorrow: Moroka Swallows v Bloemfontein Celtic (Olympia Park 3pm); Thanda Royal Zulu v Wits (Mpumalanga Stadium 3.30pm).

Name changes need more time

THE latest flurry of discussion on name changes in the Eastern Cape comes at a bad time. Eighteen months before the start of the 2010 World Cup, the Eastern Cape Geographic Names Committee has announced that the names of both Port Elizabeth and East London – as well as their respective airports – will change within the next six months. While we recognise the importance of having names that reflect the culture, history and heritage of our province, the latest rush to push the changes through before 2010 seems ill-considered and badly planned....
