Drinking in Memphizz

Brett Adkins

NEXT time you have a little grumble about what your favourite frosty is costing you, spare a thought for your fellow slukkers in the Big Smoke of Jozi. Okay, so they may earn a bit more than Eastern and Southern Cape slukkers – but still, forking out R18,50 for a 500ml local draught can cause the most seasoned froth-blower to choke on his first sip.

That‘s what the City Slukker paid last week at a McGinty‘s pub while enjoying a few days break in Gauteng – he was quite bemused at the three 50c coins he received in exchange for his R20 note.

And many other watering holes he visited weren‘t that much easier on the pocket.

Although, thanks to his sluk-mates on that side who are constantly conducting research on his behalf, CS was able to find pozzies where he was paying as little as R11,50.

Generally, though, your price range for a Castle draught is in the R14 to R18 bracket which means that in the Bay (where you‘re paying on average of between R11 and R15), slukkers can still count themselves quite lucky.

Back in the Bay, the slukker found himself in superbly slick surrounds that could easily compete with any one of the more upmarket clubs in Jozi.

CS was immediately impressed with Memphizz (the old Lennox) in Humerail simply because of the cool airiness of the pozzie and its uncluttered layout.

Along the lines of its “sizzter” clubs in town - Finnezz and Balizza (perhaps there should also be a Pozzie) - it juxtaposes chic and voguish decor with a refined, elegant and understated look and places a lot of emphasis on patron comfort.

The eye-catching, illuminated bar counters in electric lime contrast well with the more conservative shades and flat-screen TVs are ubiquitous while still being unobtrusive.

Managing things behind the bar, the urbane Chris reflected the coolness of the spot – it doesn‘t look like things ever get too flurried here.

CS‘s 330ml SAB beer was R12 and served up cold and pronto.

The ablutions at Memphizz are also up to scratch – modish, clean and well-stocked with a wee little bonus at the urinal: a small eye-level TV.

With what appears to be both a young and more mature patronage, this spot is a vibey and nicely relaxed addition to the Bay‘s more sophisticated entertainment scene.

Panto casts a magical spell over audience

SLEEPING BEAUTY: THE PANTOMIME, presented by Pemads. Directed by Rose Cowpar and Jason Perry. Little Theatre, until December 13. Reviewed by Brett Adkins.

THE annual hardy panto by Pemads has established itself as the quintessential family show – filled with all the cheer, charm and merriment associated with the festive season. That it is at times, in this instance, a little rough around the edges, its pace a bit wobbly here and there and the singing just occasionally off-key, is to be forgiven....

Attacks: No nation is safe

THIS week’s horror terrorist attacks which devastated India’s commercial hub Mumbai and in which more than 130 people died and many more were injured is once again a sobering reminder that no nation is safe from the fanatics who are prepared to die for their shadowy causes. While investigations into the motives for the attacks are still under way it is clear that it is once again Islamic extremists who have caused this unnecessary tragedy. These bloodthirsty terrorists, for that is what they are, clearly had absolutely no regard for the lives of those they targeted, indiscriminately spraying bullets at fleeing civilians many of whom were tourists. ...
