Realising a boyhood dream of playing with Black Knight

SUNSHINE Tour professional Garth Mulroy remembers watching old television footage of Gary Player taking on Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

This weekend, Mulroy will see the Grand Slam champion in action live, after the young star qualified to play in the Gary Player Invitational, presented by Coca-Cola, at The Links at Fancourt.

Mulroy‘s seven-stroke victory in the Coca-Cola Championship, hosted by Gary Player, at Fancourt on Thursday secured him a place in the prestigious Gary Player Invitational, which is being played over 36 holes at The Links.

“It‘s definitely an honour to play in Mr Player‘s event,” said Mulroy. “It‘s an event for a good cause and raises a lot of money for charity, so it should be very enjoyable.”

Mulroy realised one of his boyhood dreams when he met Player personally for the first time this week at Fancourt.

“I got into golf kind of late. But I live in the US now and watch old footage on The Golf Channel of Mr Player playing with Nicklaus and Palmer and those guys.

“I had the privilege of meeting him for the first time this week and just talking to him, and the way he conducted himself, made me think about things that I need to start doing in life.”

Mulroy has won twice in South Africa this year since returning to the Sunshine Tour from the Nationwide Tour. This latest victory has also secured him a place in next month‘s Alfred Dunhill Championship and South African Open, two tournaments he was previously not exempt for.

But first up on his agenda is a meeting with arguably the most challenging golf course in South Africa, The Links, which was designed by the Black Knight himself and which Player still rates as the best golf course in the country.

“I‘ve never played The Links before. I saw a lot of it during the Presidents Cup and it certainly looked interesting. It looked pretty tough,” he said.

Mulroy finds himself in illustrious company in this tournament. The field includes double US Open champion Retief Goosen, Italian Costantino Rocca, former European Tour legend Rodger Davis, John Bland, Vincent Tshabalala and former LPGA Tour star Sally Little.

And among the celebrities, sports stars Victor Matfield, Shaun Pollock, Lucas Radebe, Corrie Sanders, Roland Schoeman and Kenny Dalglish round off an impressive field.

Attacks: No nation is safe

THIS week’s horror terrorist attacks which devastated India’s commercial hub Mumbai and in which more than 130 people died and many more were injured is once again a sobering reminder that no nation is safe from the fanatics who are prepared to die for their shadowy causes. While investigations into the motives for the attacks are still under way it is clear that it is once again Islamic extremists who have caused this unnecessary tragedy. These bloodthirsty terrorists, for that is what they are, clearly had absolutely no regard for the lives of those they targeted, indiscriminately spraying bullets at fleeing civilians many of whom were tourists. ...

Panto casts a magical spell over audience

SLEEPING BEAUTY: THE PANTOMIME, presented by Pemads. Directed by Rose Cowpar and Jason Perry. Little Theatre, until December 13. Reviewed by Brett Adkins.

THE annual hardy panto by Pemads has established itself as the quintessential family show – filled with all the cheer, charm and merriment associated with the festive season. That it is at times, in this instance, a little rough around the edges, its pace a bit wobbly here and there and the singing just occasionally off-key, is to be forgiven....
