A legacy of principle
IT IS rare that a figure in South Africa‘s public life enjoys universal and heartfelt acclaim across our very diverse and polarised political landscape. Indeed, the country has known only a tiny handful of such people – almost all of them from the same generation. One of them was Helen Suzman, for whom the nation‘s flags will fly at half-mast tomorrow. The members of this elite and dwindling band had much in common, but what stood out for all of them was their complete and utter dedication to matters of principle and this was a hallmark of the 36 years Suzman spent in the-then all-white parliament, fighting the system from within and speak truth to power....
