Bay‘s best are ready for Santos in survival fight

Chumani Bambani WEEKEND POST REPORTER

BAY United continue their fight for survival in the Absa Premiership tomorrow when they face Cape Town‘s Santos at the EPRU Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

United – who have been competing in the Eastern Cape Soccer Challenge with European teams FC Moscow, MFK Kosice and local First Division side Jomo Cosmos this week – rested their main players during the tournament.

“The tournament really gave some of the guys who haven‘t been getting much game time a chance,” said captain Duran Francis. “And even some of them may be part of the team (tomorrow) for some practise. The squad has really been training and working hard.”

Umlilo will be out to make amends after their 3-0 beating they suffered at Athlone Stadium in their first PSL encounter

Santos have vowed to end Umlilo‘s unbeaten run so far this year. United have beaten Bidvest Wits this month and also drew with Moroka Swallows last week.

The People‘s Team will be keeping a very close eye on free-kick specialist Gareth Ncaca, and strikers Linos Chalwe and Jimmy Zakazaka.

Santos have also hinted at being wary of the experience of former Kaizer Chiefs players Patrick Mayo and Cyril Nzama, as well as shot-stopper Arthur Bartmann who “has put in some good performances this season despite his team‘s poor defensive record”.

Umlilo will be facing a determined Santos side, in search of their first win of the year, after going down 3-0 to Golden Arrows and with 1-1 draws against Ajax Cape Town and Wits.

“We are really focused on this game,” added Francis.

“Santos is a tough side, but we will put our previous result against them behind us. They managed to score three quick goals, but we came back strongly in the second half in that game. We will have to start the game the way we finished the previous game. We will put up a big fight, and will fight in every game from now on.”

The midweek loss by Maritzburg United against SuperSport United was good news for Bay. A win over Santos will be enough to keep them away from the relegation zone.

The match kicks off at 3.30pm and will be televised on SABC1.

Maturity vital in SA politics

THERE is no doubt the birth of the Congress of the People (Cope) towards the latter part of last year caused a major upheaval in the South African political landscape, perhaps the most significant realignment since Dr Andries Treurnicht‘s arch-conservatives broke away from the National Party in the early 1980s to form the Conservative Party. The result is that it has injected new life into politics and there is renewed interest in the forthcoming general election. This is good for the country and a sign democracy is working here....

Novelist learns to get by in LA

Satellite LInk, with John Harvey

WHEN it first appeared on South African television, I very much doubted whether American series Californication was all that it was cracked up to be. Firstly, I had only come in at the tail-end of one episode, and while the one-liners delivered by David Duchovny in the role of Hank Moody bordered on breaking new TV boundaries in terms of impudence, I still questioned the storyline, as has often been the case with previous Showtime productions....
