Holidays on wheels take family all over the country

Luyolo Mkentane

IF YOU want to invest in your family you had better get yourself a caravan. So says a Port Elizabeth couple who have been camping since their youth. Businessman Gert Cronje and his wife Rika, from Heatherbank, say they have made life-long friends on the caravanning circuit and have grown closer to their children.

Their current caravan, a super new Jurgens Penta four-berth, has two double beds, a microwave, fridge, gas stove, sink, and air- conditioner. Every space is utilised and it can also take two mountain bikes.

“My wife Rika and I both grew up camping,” said Cronje, who works at an information technology company.

About 14 years ago his own family bought their first tent.

“We enjoyed the tent very much and we often went to the KwaZulu Natal south coast.”

But all too often rain would put a damper on their camping trip, so they decided to invest in a caravan. “We‘ve been caravanning for about 12 years now.”

Gert and Rika celebrated the festive season in Plettenberg Bay with daughters Chandre and Elmari.

Rika said what she liked about caravanning “is that you make lifelong friends”.

“If you want to invest in family life then you have to have a caravan, because it provides the opportunity to interact with your children and hear things you‘ve never heard before.

“We enjoy every moment of it because of the friendliness of people at the camping sites.”

The Cronjes have been all over in their holiday home on wheels, visiting East London‘s Yellow Sands caravan park, KwaZulu Natal‘s Hibberdene, and parks in Port Alfred, Plettenberg Bay and Knysna, to name but a few.

Shut these hotheads up!

OVER the past month there have been increasingly disturbing signs that political tension is reaching boiling point in some parts of the country in the run-up the general election and it is time for maturity and cool heads to prevail to ensure this does not bubble over into violence. No one could ever accuse ANC Youth League president Julius Malema of being either mature or of having a cool head. On the contrary, this not-so-youthful acolyte of ANC president Jacob Zuma is a loose cannon who, with his inflammatory rhetoric and populist claptrap, has done his party irreparable harm and continues to do so virtually every time he opens his mouth....
