THANK you, Jeremy Maggs, for your column (“It’s our World Cup, so take ownership”, The Herald, August 21). I genuinely feel excited about South Africa hosting the 2010 World Cup.
I acknowledge, understand, sympathise and agree we definitely need more for our underprivileged. Housing is a problem, and our health and education structures are all at crisis points, but the reality is the World Cup is going to happen.
To all those who are complaining, do yourself a favour – choose a team to support (if not Bafana), follow them through the tournament, become involved and you will enjoy some memorable moments with the millions around the globe. This is history in the making.
Become part of the entire game – tourists and all – and please let us not become the city of “whiners”.
Maybe we should be seeing more marketing around the 2010 World Cup – in the shops, at schools, sporting and other events, just about everywhere in the city – and maybe this will create the soccer vibe we are hoping for. World Cup 2010 in our own backyards.
Party on! And Zakumi is invited! – Anusha Padayachy, Port Elizabeth
