I WAS teaching at a school in Summerstrand from 6 to 9.30pm on November 5, and how soul-destroying it was to hear loud bangs and the use of fireworks from some homes in the immediate area. This continued throughout this time and each pupil who arrived complained their animals were being badly affected.

The Northern Areas are plagued by tyre-burning and wanton throwing of crackers, but one would have hoped the message had got through to the slightly more affluent areas that not only is the use of fireworks illegal, but it causes both human and animal distress. Surely the onus is on our municipality to finally do something about this and ban them completely, as in Plettenberg Bay.

An alternative to the municipal opening of the season and New Year's fireworks display would be a laser light show, costing less than the fireworks and adopting the worldwide trend.

Please let us move forward as a city on this issue. – Linda-Louise Swain, Animal Anti-Cruelty League, Port Elizabeth

*******

GUY Fawkes has again hit the Northern Areas and especially Schauderville/Korsten, where the environment has extensively been vandalised through mindless hooliganism with the burning of tyres. I am totally disgusted with most of the community in the area who were not prepared to take any action against the perpetrators.

In fact some of them encourage this type of behaviour.

I want to express my sincere thanks to the Korsten Sector Police Forum members as well as the Gelvandale police for their efforts over the past week leading up to Guy Fawkes Day in trying to avoid/eliminate the burning and swinging of tyres. – Isaac Adams, DA councillor, Ward 11, Port Elizabeth
