THE peaceful village of Schoenies is being plagued with attacks and muggings not only on the deserted Sacramento Trail but now on the beach in front of the restaurant (“Sacramento Trail attacker strikes again”, The Herald, December 2).

Last week the fifth attack was on a couple by the same man wearing a red shirt within the past few weeks. He is armed with a knife and is not afraid to use it.

On the day of the latest attack, when I asked a man coming off the trail with his three golden Labradors if he had seen anyone wearing a red shirt as there had been another mugging, he informed me that just two weeks previously, he had been attacked by two men on the trail, again one was wearing a red T-shirt with Total as the logo. The other wore a Kaiser Chiefs cap.

When asked if he had reported the incident, he replied he hadn’t. This of course is not acceptable, the public must report all incidents.

It is only by public awareness that we can protect ourselves and be aware of the dangers of a stroll with your dog on a beautiful beach trail.

If there are any other people who have been attacked and not yet reported it to the Walmer police station, please do so as a concerned citizen. Your report could save a life.

Notices warning of these dangers are posted at the start of the trail, but sadly are often removed by people who seem not to want to alert visitors of the danger. – John Sweet, Schoenmakerskop, Port Elizabeth
