Metro’s ‘political circus’ cause of shock sacking
THE sacking of Nelson Mandela Bay Housing and Land portfolio councillor Andile Mfunda, coupled with the revelation that several major tenders are currently blocked, including contracts for cellphone and data services, security and laptops, indicates something is seriously wrong within the organisation and in the administration of the municipality.

Breathalyser only part of solution to court logjam
THE decision of the National Prosecuting Authority to give the go-ahead for the use of the Drager breathalyser in Port Elizabeth and East London must be welcomed as an intervention that will streamline the processing of offences involving driving under the influence of alcohol.

Time Zuma shut Malema up and dealt with issues
THE ANC’s commitment to a non-sexist South Africa has always been suspect, the organisation preferring to hide behind the decorative curtain of quotas rather than tackle the challenge head on as is required in a country where the incidence of rape, domestic violence and abuse of women and young girls is cause for national shame.

Strikers should consider damage caused to city
IT would not be an exaggeration to argue Nelson Mandela Bay is drifting towards anarchy. The paralysis of the transport system resulting from the taxi strike, with more than 100 people arrested outside the New Law Courts amid the firing of stun grenades by police, and the traffic department officials blocking the highway last week are examples of how a culture of disrespect for the law has become all too familiar.

Discipline, commitment lead Warriors to big win
NOT since the golden eram when the Eastern Province cricket team led by Kepler Wessels swept all opposition aside, has the province – albeit now the broader Eastern Cape – tasted such success, winning both competitions in the shorter form of the game this season. On Friday night, in a clinically professional performance, the Chevrolet Warriors proved superior in every facet of the game as they defeated the bizhub Lions in the Standard Bank Pro20 final, winning the right to compete in the Indian Champions League later this year.

Circus but no one laughing
SELDOM a day goes by that one is not left flabbergasted by what someone in the ruling party says or does. Serial motor-mouth Julius Malema, whose link between his brain and his mouth remains increasingly tenuous, is of course a prime suspect in this regard. It is almost as if his only mission in life – besides making millions through tender manipulation on the side – is to create disharmony and to insult anyone who he suspects might oppose him.

Apt decision on porn
THE mere announcement by pay TV owner Multichoice that it was conducting research into the possibility of including a porn channel in its DStv bouquets was always going to be a hot potato. To its credit, however, it has now taken note of what the research turned up – that a significant number of subscribers were opposed to “adult channels” – and has consequently canned the whole idea.

Look at development that goes further than a road
THE submission of the final environmental impact report on the proposed N2 toll road linking East London with Isipingo, south of Durban, will necessarily provoke heated debate between the “pro” and “anti” camps. There are those who believe the 560km road will bring economic benefits, particularly to the impoverished former Transkei region, and those who argue that it will result in major environmental damage to a particularly ecologically sensitive area.

Mandela doesn’t deserve his ex-wife’s castigation
WINNIE MADIKIZELA-MANDELA has yet to confirm she made the remarks attributed to her in an interview with the London Evening Standard. However if the report is accurate, they are cause for concern on two grounds. The first is the insulting way in which she referred to her former husband – this country’s first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela – who she accused of having let black people down and to Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

Forensic audit needed in Kouga tender debacle
THERE has been a temptation by the government to use the Promotion of Access to Information Act as a barrier erected to prevent the right of people to gain access to information that should normally be available. The thinking behind this, we presume, is that by making the task more difficult, all but the most determined and those prepared to pay the costs will be deterred. It is in this context that the words of Port Elizabeth High Court Judge Jannie Eksteen in a case involving the Kouga Municipality need to be seen.

Shocking lack of respect for dignity of a patient
THE Bill of Rights in this country’s Constitution provides that “everyone has inherent dignity and the right to have their dignity respected and protected”. That is the yardstick against which the actions of nursing staff at Livingstone Hospital must be measured in leaving a dead woman lying naked on a bed during visiting hours and then offering a number of hollow explanations that do nothing to dispel the conclusion that they lack any respect for the dignity of the people entrusted to their care.

Zuma’s UK outburst unbefitting of president
PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma’s outburst against the British tabloids that, in customary fashion, were as rude and obnoxious as they normally are, was at best unwise as such publications are best ignored. We believe, however, his reaction does reflect yet another mistake by a man who is ill-suited for the position of head of state of this country. In the less than 12 months he has been president it has been revealed he fathered a child out of wedlock and, in his capacity as ANC president, he has shown an inability or unwillingness to compel ANC Youth League president Julius Malema to act in a manner that does not bring discredit to the ruling party.
