RE: Were black and coloured people involved during the Second World War?

It is that time of the year when we shall be reminded about the sacrifices made by soldiers during the Second World War.

What I would like to know as a student of history is whether black and coloured people were involved during the war. If so why is this never mentioned? Who were they?

I was privileged to have spoken to Sithembiso Alfred Sullo, who was a driver of trucks bringing water and supplies to troops. For years after the war he worked for Stirk & Son in Grahamstown. He told of the danger he faced. His expression changed when he told of what happened.

Another person I knew was Daniel Maye who worked for years at St Andrews, Fairlawn.

Sadly, both men passed away years ago. It is time historians tell the whole truth. These people, like the soldiers, had a role to play in the war even if seen as minor today.

Their families would like to know about their contribution to the war effort. – NJ IMPETILE
