Curtain slowly falling on iconic Oceanarium loved by generations
PORT ELIZABETH stands to lose one of its most important landmarks, family recreational facility, educational and tourism resource and icon of Algoa Bay – the Oceanarium at Bayworld. There’s a feeling of nostalgia in viewing the former dolphin lake, its vast blue surface no longer broken intermittently by the flukes of our beloved dolphins. The walkways around the pool are buckled, cracked and rust stained and the underwater viewing area resembles a dark mausoleum, grieving for a time when the Oceanarium was the highlight of a summer holiday.

Biggest contribution made by Warriors coach Domingo
WHAT do Jake White, Jose Mourinho, Graham Ford and our very own Russell Domingo have in common? They have all won trophies at levels that they never themselves played at.WELL done to our Eastern Cape boys, and that is including Robbie Peterson for his sportsmanship of acknowledging he nicked the ball.WARRIORS are the form team of the moment. They are playing good cricket under pressure.WHAT a spectacle Wednesday night’s game was again! Again the Warriors were triumphant, you make us proud, keep it up.

Thanks to Herald Christmas Cheer for food parcels
WE received such an appreciative letter from one of the many clinics we service to thank us for food parcels for delivery to tuberculosis patients at Christmas time. Our grateful thanks go to The Herald Christmas Cheer Fund and its generous benefactors for enabling us to bring a measure of joy into the lives of these patients who suffer unbearable daily hardships.

Amazing that ‘money tree’ continues to thrive in drought
WHAT a wanton wastage of funds on a so-called retreat (“Top Bay officials to blow R100000 at resort”, The Herald, March 8). The ratepayers would appreciate if spokesman Roland Williams could name the participants who would “steal away to the office for an hour or so” – this would be the opportune time to telephone these officials as trying to make contact during normal working hours Monday to Friday is a total waste of time.SO there’s another retreat planned costing taxpayers another R100000. What a lot of jungle mumble when Williams says they need to get away so members can’t slip away to the office for an hour or so.FIRSTLY, I wish to state that as the leader of the DA in this metro I have a responsibility to protect the much abused public purse to the best of my ability. It is a responsibility my fellow DA councillors and I undertake with great odds against us, and we are very determined to expose abuse on each and every occasion we discover it.THE reason for the retreat being held away from the office is laughable. The members will sneak away back to their offices, ha, to do what?

Your officials aren’t following your lead, Mr Mayor
AS citizens of the metropole, we need to applaud the achievements of our cricket team, the Chevrolet Warriors.

Generous deed shows compassion
I WOULD like to mention a very generous deed I experienced while shopping at Checkers on February 16. Reaching the till I realised I did not have enough money to pay for all my groceries, so I left one item in the trolley.

‘Jobs for pals’ is cause of problem
I WISH to give an opinion with regard to the traffic officers blocking the M4 route (“Traffic cop protest chaos”, The Herald, March 4). For the municipality to back pay traffic officers is not a solution to the actual problem there.

Hospital patients didn’t run amok, party all night
HAVING recently been a patient at Hunterscraig, it was with utter disbelief that I read The Herald article, “Neighbours complain of parties all night at psychiatric hospital” (March 5). Unless this hospital has changed dramatically in the last few weeks, I find this report to be completely untrue.

City reaping reward of condoning traffic laxity
THE traffic department in the Bay area is reaping the results of its historic lack of resolve in managing corruption and lawlessness among its officers. It is not long ago when these same traffic officers openly defied an order from management not to wear uniforms and drive official cars in support of one of their own who had been implicated in an armed robbery.ALTHOUGH I have sympathy with the traffic cops grievances, I can’t condone the disruptive manner in which they made the residents who wanted to go to work suffer!IT was surprising to read about the traffic disruption caused by the traffic officers’ demonstration over salary increases. I was not aware there were any traffic officers on the roads in the Eastern Cape as all I see are overpaid camera operators sitting at the side of the road on sunny days.THE blockage of traffic on major routes by men supposably appointed to maintain free traffic flow is irresponsible, and it would appear the chief traffic officer and his senior officers have no control over their men.

Why do some cyclists tarnish reputation of all?
I HAVE to agree with the events described in Kathy Douglas’s letter, “Cyclists inconsiderate of competitors in marathon, walk” (The Herald, May 8).

Don’t know which way is which
IT was with some amusement I read the letter in The Herald dated February 16, regarding Essexvale’s name change (“Who moved our suburb?”).

Tourism authorities must make city an attractive stopover for overseas visitors
IT takes a trip out of Port Elizabeth to give you an objective view of your home town! My wife and I spent an evening at the Tsitsikamma Village over Valentine’s weekend.

Library closure issue must be addressed
I AM absolutely appalled at the action taken by the librarians of the city to get their voices and concerns heard. What is the municipality thinking when tax paying citizens are denied access to the city’s libraries?

Donkin tarted up, but houses still a mess
IVOR Markman’s report about the costly Donkin Reserve upgrading (“Builders on the ball with reserve revamp”, The Herald, February 25) has reference. The local authority is spending millions tarting up this national monument in time for the trillions of visitors who will invade the metro and spend trillions of rands in three months’ time.

TRAFFIC OFFICERS’ STRIKE ACTION

Water not available, but still charged
I AM fully aware the local councillors and Water Board cannot be held responsible for the lack of rain and our drought. They should however be held totally responsible for the lack of foresight and planning over the doubling of our local population and non-expansion of our water retainment areas over the last 16 years!

Boreholes relieve city of water provision
AS a result of the dire water shortage certain owners have, at some considerable expense, converted their homes to run on their borehole water. Will the council continue charging those owners an availability charge?

Big mistake to stop Central security patrol
WOULD Annette Kriga please take her head out of the sand (“Volunteers doing their best in Central streets”, The Herald, March 4)? My wife owns a shop in the Central area and we feel taking the Omega security away was a big mistake.

SA presents poor image to Cup visitors
LESS than 100 days to the biggest event ever sponsored in Africa, never mind South Africa! Stadiums and the infrastructure round airports and accesses to the stadiums are well on track to be completed or so we are told.

Gym discriminating against soccer fans by not promoting games
WITH the 2010 soccer World Cup just around the corner, I thought a fitness and wellness club such as Virgin Active would be instrumental in promoting this world event coming to our shores. We are now four months before the event, but with Virgin Active it is business as usual.

EC can’t afford to lose tourist revenue
THE income and the economy of the Eastern Cape is intimately linked to the successful running of the local events surrounding the 2010 soccer World Cup. Nothing should upset this as none in this impoverished province can afford to lose out through tourists and visitors cancelling their visits to our metro.

Cyclists inconsiderate of competitors in marathon, walk
THE weekend of February 27 saw the annual Bay-to-Bay Marathon and Scout Charity Walk. It was a great event, and well done to the organisers and to all the walkers and runners who should be commended for their positive attitudes and support towards everyone on the road (many of the runners were very encouraging to the Scout walkers cheering them on, on their way past).

Foreign media using opportunity to discredit things African
ONE cannot deny the media is one of the most powerful weapons to disseminate information. But the results of this information have far reaching consequences so far as influencing our thinking and the determination of our actions is concerned.

Security measures should be used to protect SA’s people from crime
THE government, Fifa and the 2010 local organising authorities have, according to reports, formulated a comprehensive security plan to ensure the safety of football fans. Millions are being spent on equipment and the deployment of thousands of extra officers.

With Cup only months away, still no vibe in city
BELIEVE it or not we are hosting the 2010 World Cup and no less than eight games will be played in the city. The city will be full of buzz and excitement.

Churches to pray for blessing on event
WE, the church in South Africa, have an incredible opportunity to speak blessing and life over the soccer stadiums of our nation and over the upcoming World Cup event. Churches from across the nation will be doing so together at their local soccer stadiums on the public holiday of March 22.
